Since January 1st, 2023, the second edition of the new sports boat license card has been issued. In 2018, the ID1 card replaced the previous boat license for inland waterways and lakes.

On 1 January 2021, the eID card was introduced for European Union citizens and nationals of the European Economic Area. Like the German ID card and the electronic residence permit, the new chip card comes with an online ID function.

Since 1 September 2011, non-EU citizens living in Germany have been generally issued with an electronic residence permit, an electronic residence card or a permanent electronic residence card. In most cases, the online ID function is activated, enabling online identification of the holder.
