High-Speed VPN Gateway Supports Georedundancy and Digital Sovereignty of Data Centers
FPGA-based genuscreen 40G VPN Enables Encrypted 40-Gbit/s Coupling of Data Centers
Kirchheim, 9 July 2021 – With genuscreen 40G VPN, German IT security specialist genua presents a highly secure, high-speed gateway for datacenters and companies. The FPGA-based VPN appliance was designed for the high-performance, encrypted transfer of large quantities of data. genuscreen 40G VPN is, thus, especially well suited for the secure coupling of data centers. With the technology for virtual private networks (VPN) developed in Germany, companies and operators of data centers can satisfy the requirement of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for georedundancy as well as simultaneously protect their digital sovereignty.
Data centers are a sensitive and, in part, critical communication infrastructure for the economy, the state and society. To ensure their functionality under all circumstances, the BSI requires georedundancy with a minimum separation of 200 km for high-availability or extremely high-availability data centers. This is intended to ensure that, in the event of a large-scale emergency, both locations are not affected simultaneously or within a narrow time window. With genuscreen 40G VPN, such data centers can be interconnected in a high-performance manner with a constant 40 Gbit/s and simultaneous IPSec encryption.
Highly Secure Technologies Protect Against Data Tampering and Interception
"With genuscreen 40G VPN, we offer a high-speed gateway which, thanks to FPGA technology, enables extremely fast signal processing. It supports data centers in keeping their systems highly available even in the event of critical incidents," comments Matthias Ochs, Managing Director of genua GmbH. We are happy to be able to make a contribution to the IT security and digital sovereignty of critical communication infrastructures in Germany with our 'Made in Germany' solution."
genuscreen 40G VPN is based on solutions that are used in the public sector and by companies with an obligation to maintain secrecy. The appliance is thereby suitable for the reliable protection of highly sensitive communication connections against manipulation and interception. The objective is approval for German classification level "Restricted". In addition, solutions from genua are already equipped with quantum-computer-resistant software signatures. They are, thus, already effective against tomorrow's IT security risks.
High Throughput with Minimal Latency Thanks to FPGA
genuscreen 40G VPN uses field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for the exceptionally fast signal processing. The data throughput is a consistent 40 Gbit/s for up to 1024 encrypted connections with a latency of less than 20 µs. This performance is achieved even with IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) encryption and independent of the packet mix – large, small or IMIX. Data traffic is encoded with AES-256-GCM with 16-byte integrity check. The IPsec standard ensures compliant encryption on layer 3 here. Encrypted frames remain routable thanks to encapsulation in IP and IPsec ESP headers. Layer 2 over layer 3 is also possible.
Even demanding applications such as VoIP or video conferencing can be secured thanks to the low latency. With its small size of just two height units, the appliance saves important space in the data center.
